What is HPV?

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), also known as the human papillomavirus, is one of the viruses transmitted
through sexual contact
and is known for being highly contagious.
  • People of all ages and genders

Men and women of all ages
    can get HPV

HPV infection occurs most often in adolescents and young adults,
but it can affect men and women of any age.
  • A couple in bed

    HPV infection through sexual contact

HPV is transmitted mainly through sexual contact and causes disease.
  • A couple

You can transmit HPV without knowing it

Many people with HPV have no symptoms, so they can pass it to a partner unknowingly.

    HPV causes cancer
    and genital warts

HPV divides into high-risk types, which cause cancer, and low-risk types, which cause condyloma (genital warts).

Adults have, at least once in their lives,
a 70% chance of genital HPV infection

Most adults are exposed to HPV at least once, so the chance of infection is very high.
Since anyone can be infected, preventing it in advance is the surest protection.

Conditions caused by HPV infection

HPV causes a range of conditions in men as well as women, including cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, anal cancer, and condyloma (genital warts).

HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) Q&A

Goldman's know-how gives clear answers to patients' questions.
  • At present, Gardasil vaccination is in most cases a non-covered item. However, those eligible under the National Immunization Program (adolescent girls in certain age groups) can be vaccinated free.Check eligibility at a public health center or our clinic.

  • The Gardasil 9 vaccine requires 2 or 3 doses depending on age.

    Ages 9–14: 2 doses

Ages 15 and over: 3 doses
The doses are generally given at 0 months → 2 months → 6 months.

  • The cost of Gardasil vaccination depends on the type of vaccine used and the number of doses. In general, one dose costs about KRW 150,000–200,000, and Gardasil 9 requires a total of 2–3 doses. The exact cost may vary depending on the clinic and the vaccination schedule.

  •  The best time for HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination is ages 11–12.

Vaccination works best in early adolescence (ages 9–14), before sexual exposure to the virus, so this period is recommended.

  • Not everyone who is sexually active gets HPV.Even if infected, symptoms may not appear right away and the virus can persist long-term in the body, so vaccination is still advisable. It also protects against types you have not caught.

  • If the type you carry is HPV 16, vaccination is recommended because the other types can still be prevented. However, receiving the vaccine does not eliminate type 16.

  • Vaccination is possible while breastfeeding. However, it is not known whether vaccine antigens or vaccine-induced antibodies pass into breast milk.
