Herpes

There is no cure, so long-term management tailored to your recurrence pattern is needed.

Blisters that keep coming back
may be more than a simple skin problem.

Herpes is an infection caused by HSV (herpes simplex virus), and
because delayed early treatment raises the risk of recurrence and transmission, prompt diagnosis and proper treatment are essential.

What is herpes?

Herpes is a viral disease caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
HSV is divided into type 1 and type 2, and generally type 1 causes lesions around the mouth and type 2 around the genitals.
Recently, however, type 1 is increasingly found in the genital area and type 2 around the mouth, making the two harder to tell apart.

Herpes: how is it transmitted?

Herpes is mainly spread through direct skin or mucosal contact with an infected person. In particular, infection risk is high during sex, and the virus can spread even with no blisters or symptoms at all. In addition, broken skin or a weakened immune system makes infection even more likely, so particular care is needed.
  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV)

Herpes is caused by HSV type 1 and type 2, which mainly infect the oral and genital areas respectively.
  • Damaged skin and mucous membranes

The virus enters through broken skin or mucous membranes, travels to nerve cells and lies dormant there.
  • Direct contact transmission

It spreads by direct contact with an infected person's skin, blisters, or mucous membranes, most often through sex.
  • Possible transmission without symptoms

Even without blisters, the virus can remain on the skin and be passed on with no symptoms.
  • Weakened immunity

When immunity weakens due to overwork, stress, or illness, the dormant virus can reactivate and symptoms can return.
  • Risk of infection during pregnancy

Infection during pregnancy is very likely to pass to the fetus and can cause serious complications in the newborn.

Herpes:
what symptoms does it cause?

Depending on the site of infection, herpes causes painful blisters on the lips, in the mouth, or around the genitals, which may be accompanied by itching, stinging, or a tingling sensation.
During a first infection, a high fever above 40°C, severe stomatitis, and flu-like aches all over the body may also appear.
However, symptoms are often mild or appear late, so the infection can go unnoticed.
Blisters on the lips
  • Blisters around the mouth

Small, painful blisters appear on the lips,
around the mouth, and inside the mouth.
  • Tingling warning signs

Before the blisters appear, you may feel
    a stinging or itching sensation.
  • Stomatitis and sore throat

A first infection may be accompanied by
systemic symptoms such as stomatitis, sore throat, and high fever.

Herpes diagnosis:
what methods are available?

The most important step in treating sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including herpes, is identifying the exact cause.
Goldman was the first urology clinic in Korea to introduce PCR genetic testing, which offers far higher accuracy than simple bacterial culture tests.
Goldman Urology Clinic selects and recommends the most suitable diagnostic method based on your symptoms and stage of infection.

Gene Amplification Test (Multi-PCR Test)

Genetic testing (PCR) on a lesion specimen gives an accurate diagnosis, confirming the virus type and ruling out similar conditions.Since testing needs active skin symptoms, get tested as soon as they appear.
Blood Test

Blood Test

Without skin symptoms, a blood test can be used.
The first step in diagnosis — check points of Goldman's Multi-PCR test
  • More accurate, sensitive, and faster than conventional bacterial culture.
  • Rapidly detects many pathogens, including HPV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and mycoplasma.
  • Beyond confirming infection, it identifies the bacteria type and any drug resistance.
  • As the first urology clinic to adopt PCR testing, Goldman draws on deep experience and varied cases for more precise diagnoses.

Genital herpes treatment:
how is it carried out?

There is currently no way to cure genital herpes completely. The best available treatment is to relieve symptoms quickly with antiviral medication when an outbreak occurs and to reduce recurrences.
Antiviral drugs work best when taken within 72 hours of symptom onset, but even with medication recurrence cannot be prevented, and their effect on post-herpetic neuralgia may also be minimal.
