Hematuria

Blood in your urine can be a warning sign of a urinary tract problem.

Blood in your urine?
Ignoring it could lead to cancer.

Hematuria can be an early sign of a serious condition such as urologic cancer or kidney disease.
If you have visible blood in your urine, the cause should be identified and treated through a detailed workup.

What is hematuria?

Hematuria is a symptom in which abnormal red blood cells appear in the urine, meaning that bleeding has occurred somewhere in the urinary tract.
It is divided into gross hematuria, which is visible to the naked eye, and microscopic hematuria, which can only be detected through testing.
Hematuria

Hematuria — if you see it, you need accurate, age-appropriate testing.

The causes of hematuria vary with age. In younger people it may be a urinary tract infection (UTI) or stones,
while in those aged 50 and over it may be a condition of the kidneys, bladder, or prostate, so diagnosis tailored to each age group is required.

Hematuria: why does it happen?

Hematuria can occur anywhere along the urinary tract that urine passes through, so its causes are extremely varied.
A comprehensive examination from the kidneys to the prostate is needed, and because in some cases it may be a sign of kidney disease or a tumor, an accurate diagnosis is important.

Diagnosing hematuria:
what methods are available?

If hematuria is suspected, a urinalysis is performed first to confirm whether blood is present in the urine.
If hematuria is observed consistently in 3 times or more urinalyses, further examination is needed to identify the exact cause.

Medical Interview and History Taking

A detailed interview on your symptoms, urination habits, and medical history gives clues to the cause.
Urinalysis

Urinalysis

First-morning or midstream urine is tested three times; if red blood cells exceed the reference level, further tests follow.
Ultrasound Examination

Ultrasound Examination

It is used to diagnose kidney and bladder tumors, urinary tract obstruction, and orchitis; the prostate is examined by transrectal ultrasound.

Cystoscopy

Checks for bladder cancer and stones; recommended to find the cause of hematuria in people 50 and older.

Tissue Biopsy

If cystoscopy shows abnormal findings, further tests are done with your consent.
Intravenous pyelography (IVP) scan

Intravenous Pyelography (IVP)

Contrast dye is injected to image how the kidneys, ureters, and bladder excrete urine.
Urinalysis is done three times to confirm hematuria.Further testing is needed if 3 or more red blood cells per HPF appear at least twice, 100 or more appear even once, or blood is visible to the naked eye.

Hematuria treatment:
how is it carried out?

Microscopic hematuria has no symptoms and is often found late, so a yearly urinalysis matters. If you see blood in your urine, visit the clinic for a detailed exam so the cause can be treated quickly.
