If the MRI result is normal, does that mean no prostate cancer?

It means that clinically significant prostate cancer is unlikely, but it does not mean the possibility is zero. Based on your PSA level and symptoms, we will recommend regular follow-up tests.

When will I get my test results?

Goldman aims for same-day scanning and same-day reading. A radiologist who specializes in urological imaging (uro-radiologist) reads the scan, and a urologist explains the results to you.

I have claustrophobia. Can I still have the exam?

Scan time is much shorter, so you spend less time in the enclosed space. You can keep talking with our medical staff during the scan, so please let us know at any time if you feel uncomfortable.

If my PSA level is high, do I need a biopsy right away?

Not necessarily. PSA can also rise because of BPH or inflammation, so at Goldman we first use MRI to check for any suspicious area. Studies have shown that doing MRI first, with targeted biopsy only when needed, finds more clinically significant cancers than standard biopsy (26% → 38%, NEJM 2018 PRECISION trial). We avoid unnecessary biopsies and make sure the necessary ones are accurate.

Prostate AI MRI Scan: when is it needed?

When your PSA level is high or a detailed prostate exam is needed,

Before a biopsy, MRI comes first

Prostate MRI rates suspicious areas using the international standard reporting system (PI-RADS), grades 1 to 5.
If the grade is low, you can choose watchful follow-up instead of rushing into a biopsy,
and if the grade is high, it leads to a targeted biopsy aimed only at the suspicious area.
Checking the MRI first means fewer unnecessary biopsies and more accurate testing when it is needed.
